Installing a modded Skyrim was a bit cumbersome: the entire folder has to be copied to a USB storage device from PC, then replace the one on Steam Deck through desktop mode. It was unclear how much performance impact the mods would bring. The vanilla game could run ~60 FPS under medium setting, which I didn't want to sacrifice.

Yeah, I had to add the 30 fps and dynamic fps mods otherwise it stays at 20fps. I have EA 3605, and a bunch of performance mods, and it runs at about 25-30 fps. The biggest difference made for me was unlocking the fps. With it locked it doesn't go above 21, but unlocked it goes to 30 in the overworld.
For performance tweaking I suggest you start with the UMA 4GB bios setting and Cryoutilities.
