All season long I quite often had problems running at 1,400 to 2,000-RPM and anywhere in between, a swing of 400 to 600-RPM. I've never seen one fail on that model in the last 15 years as a Mercury tech. Make sure you are firing on all cylinders. Start the motor up, take a good pair of insulated pliers and pull the spark plug boots off of the plugs (very easy to do on this model) the motor might quit or drop 300-400 RPM.
