Yeah it takes Colorless Demon Souls. Technically you can get 10 of those per playthrough, so you can fully upgrade two pieces of equipment. Another weapon to consider is the Istarelle. It's pretty much the spear version of the Large Sword of Moonlight (S scaling in fth, uses Colorless souls). It takes up up 3 spell slots so you need 18 Intelligence for that which will also give you 119 MP which is enough to cast it (uses 100 MP). To be able to actually cast spells you need 10 Magic.
