Kotor 1 is a more classic, lighthearted, and optimistic Star Wars story, and it also has the benefit of actually being complete on release, unlike Kotor 2. However, Kotor 2 takes an interesting, new, and darker approach to the Star Wars universe, and is more of a deconstruction. It's written more in depth and with shades of gray.

KotOR has a really special place in my heart, but the story is very simple and predictable. That's perfectly okay, though. The films, afterall, were very similar, with blatant heroic vs. villainous actions. Even with an obvious twist, it handled it very well.
