Spears are the best melee weapons overall imo. Crafted spear break easily without some advanced skills but that's what spears with attached weapons are for. Wait if you put a hunting knife on a spear, does it last LONGER? Does it last a long as the attached weapon usually does? Yes. Attached weapon durability does matter.
Wood axe = highest damage inflicte ingame. Is prolly as one shotty as a katana. (never found one!) Spiked bbbat 60% or so damage of Wood axe, easier to repair and lasts longer.
