Some of my personnal favorite wads: Sunder: too hard for me, but the level design is one of the, if not the most well thought of all the slaughter wads I know. Easily one of the hardest wads existing (by hardest, I also mean "humanly playable"). Speed Of Doom: very hard, but great variety of maps, and very well designed.

Ancient Aliens, Valiant, Eviternity, Auger Zenith are some of my favorites that don't get too bad difficulty-wise, though they can get quite challenging in places. I think I found Going Down harder than those at its hardest, but that's subjective of course. If you haven't gone into Final Doom, those might be a good place to start too.

So its an understandable development, but that does not mean that it should be an acceptable one. The search button is there for exactly these questions, after all. But that's just my 2 cents. The author also uses most of the Doom 2 repertoire of enemies in very tight spaces and high numbers, making the maps challenging to a certain degree.
