I tried reloading impatiently and accidentally hit F instead of R, 3 times fast, my character inspected his gun. Found out after fiddling around with it that if you hit F three times it will make your character look his weapons over.

Unfortunately Stalker does something silly with how it handles the different firing modes. For example fire a single shot in single fire mode, notice how the crosshair settles back to where it was after recoil. Then put it into auto fire mode and again fire a single shot, notice how it doesn't settle back into that location.

I think you need ''basic tools'', then combine it with required materials at a workbench to make various repair and smithing kits. I Just found my first basic tools after a 9 hr session, i got it from a green box stash in Cordan as a reward for a quest. If you dont have any luck you could always cheat one in in debug mode.
