KOTOR takes place thousands of years prior to the films and because of that, legends or canon, from an objective standpoint does not matter because the story doesn't have any repercussions in the movies timeline. So, you see, the KOTOR Remake won’t be canon. It’ll be Legends. But the reason for it being Legends is largely why you want it to be canon: it takes place so far away from the movies, it won’t impact any existing story. In other words, to our movie characters, it will be as historically significant as mythical legends.

Both Knights of the Old Republic games canonically have light side endings. Thus far this only matters for the Star Wars canon outside of the games, though — and even then this is mostly theoretical for the sake of official timelines and such (all actual narrative media, like the KotOR comics, have left the events of the games ambiguous).
